2009 marks the eight year for the Thurman Mitchell Servant Christian Leadership Celebration. As part of the celebration, SCCF will present the 2009 Passion Awards: Faith Unleashed!
Doubling last year's submissions, 220 ministries submitted proposals this year. An acronym for FAITH guided the ministries' proposals: focus, Action; Insight; Triumphs; and Hurdles; and finally, a description of how faith is being unleashed in their communities. An independent grant committee reviewed each proposal, and the top 43 scorers presented their ministries to SCCF in personal visits. Proposal and visit scored were combined to identify the 23 Passion Award recipients.
God is doing amazing works in our city and beyond! We pray you will be encouraged tonight as we celebrate together. May you begin the vision of what it looks like to have your FAITH UNLEASHED!
THURMAN MITCHELL
A popular KCV-5 reporter, Thurman Mitchell, covered the news in Kansas City for two decades. Ironically, the cameras which brought him notoriety also prompted him to leave the spotlight. On one of the sultry summer nights for which this city is known, Thurman covered the story of yet another teenager gunned down in senseless gang violence. The outline of the body was just a few feet from a locked church door. Thurman interviewed another gang member at the scene and psed the question, "Why do you continue this cycle of violence?" The young man responded "You can't go another way when you don't know another way".
This troubling truth promoted Thurman to take part in teaching Kansas City's urban youth how to go another way. Through Thurman's faithful message of love and hope, Victory Temple Christian Life Center grew from a handful of families to a vibrant congregation of hundreds, including urban youth. In 1998, Thurman left the television lights to become a full-time pastor and the founder of Urban Youth Leadership, an urban youth training organization. He was also instrumental in forming the Kansas City Alliance of Urban Ministries, a coalition of urban ministries working together to build urban leaders.
On April 9, 2000, Kansas City lost this beloved leader and public figure who had worked tirelessly to develop an "army" of urban leaders. Thurman's caring spirit, boundless energy, and passion for Jesus continue today, not only in the church he pastored and the organization he founded, but also in the lives of many others he impacted. He truly showed Kansas City "another way". As a tribute to his life, the Servant Christian Community Foundation (SCCF) proudly hosts the Thurman Mitchell Servant Leadership Celebration.
